Are bed bugs really an emergency?

Bed bugs aren't known to spread disease, so this isn't a medical emergency the way a sting allergy can be. It is urgent for two other reasons: every week adds eggs, and every move between rooms, cars and homes can carry bugs along.

Speed matters most behind shared walls. In the older twins and rowhomes of eastern Delaware County, where Census (ACS) estimates put the median home in Lansdowne at 1943 and Yeadon at 1951, bed bugs can travel along pipes and wiring to the unit next door.

Dark fecal spots along a mattress seam are one of the clearest early signs of bed bugs.

Signs that point to bed bugs, and why they turn up here

Bites alone are not proof, since mosquito, flea and carpet beetle reactions look similar. Stronger evidence is physical: rust-colored or black spots on sheets and mattress piping, pale shed skins in seams, tiny white eggs about the size of a pinhead in crevices of the bed frame, and in heavy cases a sweet, musty smell in the bedroom. Bat bugs, a close relative, can turn up in houses with bats in the attic, another reason a captured sample matters.

Most local cases start with travel or furniture. Bed bugs ride home in luggage after a hotel stay or a flight out of Philadelphia International Airport, arrive with secondhand couches and mattresses, and move in with each round of lease turnovers and student move-ins near Swarthmore, Widener, Villanova and Neumann. Once inside a twin or rowhome, they can follow shared pipes and wiring to the next unit, which is why a fast inspection protects more than one household.

Found bed bugs tonight? What to do before bed

  1. Keep sleeping in your own bed

Moving to the couch or a guest room invites the bugs to follow you and start a second infestation.

  2. Catch one for identification

Press clear packing tape over a bug or drop it in a zip-top bag. A sample tells us whether it's a bed bug, a bat bug or a carpet beetle.

  3. Bag and dry the bedding

Strip sheets and pillowcases straight into a plastic bag, carry it to the dryer and run it on the hottest setting.

  4. Pull the bed off the wall

Move the bed a few inches from walls and nightstands, and keep blankets from touching the floor.

  5. Put the bug bomb down and leave furniture in place

Foggers don't reach the cracks where bed bugs hide, push them into walls and neighboring units, and create a fire hazard near pilot lights. Hauling a mattress down a hallway or to the curb spreads bugs and can infest a neighbor's place.

  6. Watch for a severe reaction

Bites are usually just itchy, but seek medical care for a severe reaction, and call 911 if anyone has trouble breathing.

How our emergency bed bug treatment begins

  1. Free inspection of sleeping areas

We check mattress seams, box spring, headboard, bed frame joints, nightstands, baseboards and outlet plates near the bed.

  2. Confirm and map the spread

Live bugs, eggs, shed skins and dark fecal spots show how long they've been there and which rooms are involved.

  3. Ask about the neighbors

In a twin, rowhome or apartment, we talk through whether adjoining units should be checked too.

  4. Written quote and prep list

You get the price in writing and a room-by-room prep list before treatment.

  5. Treatment

We treat the infested areas with the method that fits the home and the size of the problem.

  6. Return visit

Eggs laid before treatment hatch afterward, so we schedule a follow-up to catch the next generation.

Which treatment fits: chemical, heat or both?

Most homes are treated with targeted products applied to seams, cracks and furniture joints, followed by a return visit. Our bed bug chemical treatment page explains how that works and the prep it needs.

Heat treatment raises room temperatures high enough to kill every life stage and can suit heavy infestations in cluttered rooms. Ask on the call whether heat is an option for your property. The full picture, from inspection to prevention, is on our main bed bug treatment page.

Same-day bed bug visits, hours and pricing

Reviews from customers mention us coming out the same day, and bed bugs are exactly the kind of call where that matters. Read how same-day exterminator booking works. We're open every day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; if you find bugs at 11 p.m., follow the steps above and call at 8, because the population won't change much overnight but your next moves can.

After the free inspection, the price is written down before treatment, and you can ask on the call how urgent visits are priced. These factors weigh most:

  • The number of rooms, beds and upholstered pieces involved
  • How established the infestation is, from a few adults to heavy egg clusters
  • Clutter and the amount of prep the rooms need
  • Whether adjoining units in a twin, rowhome or apartment need inspecting
  • The treatment method chosen
  • How many follow-up visits the job calls for

Pennsylvania law on bed bug treatment and rental homes

Bed bug work is a pesticide application under the Pennsylvania Pesticide Control Act of 1973. The Department of Agriculture (PDA) licenses pest control businesses and certifies applicators, and you can ask any provider for its PDA business license number. Product labels matter here more than with most pests: only products labeled for mattresses and bedding may be applied to them.

For renters, Pennsylvania courts recognize an implied warranty of habitability in residential leases (Pugh v. Holmes, 1979), and leases often say who handles pest treatment. Keep your photos, the sample and the written inspection findings together. This is general information, not legal advice.

Keeping bed bugs from spreading while you wait

Keep laundry bagged until it goes into the dryer, and leave backpacks and purses off beds and couches. Postpone sleepovers and overnight guests until after treatment. If you rent, tell your landlord in writing with a photo; leases often assign pest responsibility. This is general information, not legal advice.

Bed bugs aren't the only unwelcome after-dark discovery. If you're also hearing scratching inside the walls, see our emergency rodent removal page.

Where we provide emergency bed bug treatment

Bed bugs spread fastest where homes share walls and residents change often. Upper Darby is block after block of rowhomes, Drexel Hill mixes brick twins with the large Drexelbrook apartment community, and Chester and Media both have renter shares near 60%, according to Census (ACS) estimates. In each, a quick inspection protects the household next door as much as yours.

  • Lansdowne

Victorian twins and apartment houses with a median build year of 1943 have old plaster walls and shared chases that let bed bugs reach the next unit.

  • Yeadon

With 55% of households renting in twins along the Cobbs Creek line, a bed bug find in one home is a reason to check the neighbor too.

  • Darby

Half the households rent in trolley-line rowhomes near Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, and frequent move-ins carry bed bugs in with furniture.

  • East Lansdowne

Pre-war twins from around 1938 pack this tiny borough, so a bed bug problem rarely stays on one side of the party wall for long.

  • Millbourne

At the Millbourne stop on the city line, 66% of households rent, and older buildings with shared hallways make early inspection important.

  • Collingdale

Row and twin streets along the Route 102 trolley have shared basements and walls where bed bugs travel between households.

  • Prospect Park

In this rail borough, 42% of households rent, many in homes from around 1949 with connecting pipes and wiring between units.

  • Swarthmore

Student move-ins around Swarthmore College and secondhand furniture each fall bring bed bug calls to rentals and large pre-war houses.

  • Rosemont

Apartment buildings off Lancaster Avenue near Rosemont College change tenants often, and each move is a chance for bed bugs to arrive.

  • Tinicum Township

Homes in Essington near Philadelphia International Airport see bed bugs come home in luggage from flights and hotel stays.

Emergency Bed Bug Treatment: common questions

What should I do tonight if I find bed bugs?

Sleep in your usual bed, run the sheets through a hot dryer and save one bug on tape so we can identify it. Leave the mattress where it is and skip any fogger. Pull the bed slightly away from the wall. In the morning, call when we open at 8 for the most room in the day's schedule.

Should I throw away my mattress?

Usually not. A mattress with bed bugs can almost always be treated and then zipped into a bed bug-proof encasement, which traps anything left inside. Throwing it out costs you a bed, spreads bugs on the way to the curb and doesn't end the infestation, since bugs also hide in frames, outlets and baseboards. Ask us before discarding anything.

Can I stay in the home before treatment?

Yes, in almost every case, and you should. Leaving for a friend's house or a hotel risks carrying bed bugs with you, and the ones at home simply wait. Sleeping in the same bed keeps them in one place, which makes inspection and treatment more effective. Your prep list explains when to step out during the treatment itself.

How many visits will it take?

Most bed bug jobs need more than one visit, because eggs laid before treatment hatch afterward. We set the follow-up schedule based on what the inspection finds, the treatment method and the size of the home, and we explain that plan along with the written quote, so you know what's coming.

Will bed bugs spread to the other side of my twin?

They can. Bed bugs travel through shared walls along pipes, wiring and baseboard gaps, a common path in Delaware County's older brick and stone twins. If you share a wall, tell your neighbor or landlord, and ask us about inspecting the adjoining unit so the treatment isn't undone from next door.
